$9
million Raised for Multiple Sclerosis in 144 Cities
MS Society community walk event draws over 60,000 participants nationwide
July 27, 2004 - Toronto – So far in 2004, 144 communities across Canada have joined the fight against multiple sclerosis by participating in the Super Cities WALK for MS and have raised $9 million in the process. The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada’s
signature walk event brings family, friends and coworkers together
to walk routes of up to 15 km in an effort to end MS.
Five more walk events are scheduled for August and September in North Bay, Thunder Bay, Sherbrooke, Quebec City and Sorel-Tracy, Quebec.
“This has been a banner year for us,” said Ken Mayhew, vice president of fundraising for the MS Society of Canada. “We expanded the program in 2004 and every location – new and old – has
shown great enthusiasm in walking for MS. The excitement
for this program continues to grow and we look forward to
seeing even more people out next year.”
Money raised through fundraisers such as Super Cities WALK for MS goes to fund client services and research into MS. For example, in early May, the MS Society of Canada announced a $4.3 million study of multiple sclerosis in children. The project is the first of its kind in the world and researchers hope it will shed light on the triggers that cause MS.

The MS Society gratefully acknowledges national sponsors of the Super Cities WALK for MS program: Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Culligan, Brinks, Yahoo! Canada, Flare and Chatelaine Magazine.
About multiple sclerosis and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. It is the most common neurological disease of young adults in Canada. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 40, and the unpredictable effects of MS last for the rest of their lives. The MS Society provides services to people with MS and their families and funds research to find the cause, prevention, treatment and cure for this disease.
